Tour Description:
Visit sites listed on the National Register of Historic Landmarks/ Places:
House in the Horseshoe (also called the Alston House) circa 1772, a pre-Revolutionary War plantation home, is the site of a skirmish during the Revolutionary War and proudly wears musket-volley holes. Our docent will captivate us with a black powder musket demonstration and with stories of life as a Continental Army soldier.
Malcolm Blue Farm, a vintage 1825 farm built by an early Scot settler, is host of an annual Civil War Battle re-enactment and festival, and nearby is Bethseda Church, circa 1860, where Walter Hines Page is buried, a local ancestor, who was the Ambassador to England.
Shaw House, circa 1700s-1800s, on its original foundation at the crossroads of two major trade routes, was the home of an early manufacturer of pine pitch and turpentine. Additionally, other homes and out buildings dating from 1770 are included on the property, offering a perspective of early life in our area and the land that was so barren “even the crows packed lunches” when flying over the Sandhills.
